We are currently seeking a Full-time Support Services Worker to join our AbleLiving Services, Binbrook team! 

AbleLiving Services is part of the Thrive Group.  We are a not-for-profit organization that provides services funded through Ontario Health. Ableliving opened its doors in 1978 with the first project being our Binbrook location. We continue to build the organization and provide exceptional services with support from Ontario Health. Our Binbrook location provides support for individuals with disabilities, seniors, as well as those with long-term chronic ventilation support needs.

This position reports to the Support Services Program Coordinator and is responsible for a variety of tasks including laundry and housekeeping services, food services and prep-cook responsibilities. This position is responsible for collecting, laundering and returning clients' personal laundry, performing housekeeping tasks in clients' rooms and common areas, assisting the Cook with maintaining food inventory, meal preparation, and setting and serving meals to clients, all while ensuring safe food preparation and handling practices.

Key Duties include: 

  • This position is responsible for operating a full laundry service for the clients and facility. As well as for washing and drying all linens, bedding and client clothing on a daily basis, with the occasional sewing repair by hand.
  • Responsible for providing housekeeping and laundry duties to maintain a clean, tidy, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment for clients, staff, family, members and anyone visiting the facility.  This position is responsible for utilizing appropriate equipment and chemicals to ensure effective infection prevention and control.
  • Responsible for the safe preparation and service of food for residents, visitors and staff.  Work with the Cooks to prepare items required for the menu and follow production sheets determining appropriate quantities of food needed to meet menu requirements.  The incumbent follows safe food handling practices for proper sanitation.  The position works collaboratively with Food Service Staff to ensure daily duties are performed in a timely and effective manner. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 

  • A minimum of a Grade 10 education or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the Food Handlers Certificate as offered by Public Health Services within 60 days of employment and renewed every 5 years.
  • Must demonstrate a high commitment to providing exceptional customer service and be reliable, punctual, and capable of managing time effectively. 
  • Must be a strong team player who demonstrates the ability to develop supportive relationships and work collaboratively with clients, family members, and colleagues. 
  • Must be able to take direction and work independently as well as as part of a team. 
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, and have a genuine interest in working with seniors and adults with disabilities in a congregate home setting. 
  • Knowledge of basic math and the ability to do calculations and quantity measurements is required.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work and perform tasks according to priority.
  • Experience in a long-term care/retirement home kitchen is an asset.
  • Must demonstrate ability to problem solve, work efficiently, and effectively, and meet required timelines. 
  • Must be able to maintain a clean/sanitary work area and meet the physical demands of the position which include but are not limited to: standing, shifting, leaning over stoves/grills, reaching bending, lifting/moving items of variable weights. 
  • Familiarity with cleaning detergents and laundering equipment is beneficial.
  • Must be able to maintain regular and consistent attendance, be punctual and meet pre-determined deadlines. 
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check or Police Records Check is required.
